ChatGPT Business (formerly Team): 2026 Update

OpenAI officially renamed ChatGPT Team to ChatGPT Business (rename effective on Aug 29, 2025). The rename itself did not automatically change your contract terms, but current seat models and pricing have been expanded.

What ChatGPT Business is

ChatGPT Business is a self-serve team workspace that provides:

• Shared workspace for collaboration
• Centralized billing and usage visibility
• Admin controls for members, roles, and seat access
• Business privacy terms (OpenAI says workspace data is not used for training)

Seat types and billing model

Business now supports two seat types:

1. Standard ChatGPT seats (fixed price)

   • Includes ChatGPT access and Codex access in the workspace
   • Typical reference pricing: $25/user/month (monthly) or $20/user/month (annual), region-dependent
   • Minimum purchase is 2 seats for standard ChatGPT seats

2. Codex seats (usage-based)

   • Codex-only access (no ChatGPT seat access)
   • No fixed monthly seat fee; billed by usage via workspace credits
   • No minimum Codex seat count

You can mix both seat types in one workspace and change seat types in admin settings.

Important boundaries

• ChatGPT Business subscription does not include API usage (API is billed separately)
• If you need invoicing, PO, bank transfer, ZDR, BAA, or other sales-led options, OpenAI recommends contracted offerings (for example Enterprise-style procurement)

Which plan should you pick?

• Individual students: start with Free, then choose Go if you need higher daily usage at lower cost; move to Plus if you need deeper tools and higher limits.
• Student teams / labs / clubs: consider Business when you need shared admin controls, member management, and centralized spend visibility.
• Engineering teams focused on coding workflows: Business can mix standard ChatGPT seats and Codex seats, so you can assign access by role.

ChatGPT Student Discount (Ended)

OpenAI ran a student promo from March to May 2025. US and Canadian college students got 2 free months of ChatGPT Plus if they verified through SheerID. It’s over now.

What It Was

2 months free ChatGPT Plus. That meant:

• Access to latest flagship models (including fast and deeper-reasoning modes, depending on plan)
• No waiting during busy times
• Change tone mid-conversation (professional, casual, whatever)
• Way more daily messages than free tier
• Doesn’t randomly slow down when you’re in the middle of something

Who Got It

Had to be:

• Student at a real US or Canadian college/university
• Could verify via SheerID (needed .edu email or uploaded proof)
• Had a ChatGPT account
• Agreed to their terms

Just US and Canada. They said maybe they’d expand it but then ended the whole thing.

How It Worked

1. Go to chat.openai.com and log in
2. Visit chatgpt.com/students, hit “Claim Now”
3. Fill out SheerID form with school info
4. If .edu email didn’t work automatically, upload student ID or something
5. Get email, click button, done

Already had Plus? Cool, you got 2 months credit. Didn’t work for Pro or if you bought through app stores.

Problems People Had

Verification fails - SheerID didn’t recognize your school, you’re not in US/Canada, or you already used it

Wrong account - Used different accounts for SheerID vs ChatGPT

Canceled too early - Some people canceled their sub during verification and got locked out

Upload issues - Had to deal with SheerID support, OpenAI couldn’t help with that part

After Free Period

Auto-renewed at $20/month unless you canceled. Canceled? You kept Plus until billing cycle ended. Once you canceled you couldn’t get the discount back.

Check Your School’s Rules

Some schools ban AI for assignments. Check before using ChatGPT for homework or you might get in trouble.

ChatGPT Go: Budget Option for Students

Plus costs $20/month, which can be expensive on a student budget. OpenAI announced on January 16, 2026 that Go is now globally available in all ChatGPT-supported countries and regions. A common reference price is $8/month (localized pricing may vary by region).

What’s In It

• Around 10x higher practical usage headroom than Free for everyday workflows
• Expanded access to latest fast models for daily use (region/account dependent)
• Longer memory
• Better continuity during normal high-frequency use
• More image generation capacity
• Higher file upload limits
• Can create and use Custom GPTs

What’s Not

• No Sora (video generation)
• No full Deep Research workflows
• No full Agent Mode / Codex workflows
• Lower overall ceiling and reasoning depth than Plus

For regular school stuff - essays, coding help, studying - Go’s enough. Need videos or deep research? Get Plus.

Global Availability and Ads Policy

Go is currently available in about 170+ countries and regions (the exact number may shift slightly as OpenAI updates support lists), including the U.S., most of Europe, most of Asia, and major South American markets.

Starting April 16, 2026, OpenAI began showing ads to Free and Go users in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education are not affected.

Where It Works

In practice, if ChatGPT is supported in your region, Go is generally available. Always confirm on your account subscription page.

Should You Get It?

Yeah if:

• Free tier’s not enough but $20 is too much
• You use it for text/code/content
• 10-30 times a day
• You need higher limits but not full professional tooling

Get Plus instead if:

• Need Sora
• Need Deep Research for papers
• Need Agent Mode
• Need premium-level reasoning/tool depth for complex tasks

Other Options

Student discount’s gone. Here’s what’s left:

• ChatGPT Go - about $8/month (region-dependent), good for frequent daily use.

• Seasonal subscriptions - Pay for Plus during finals, cancel after.

$20/month can still be heavy for students, while Go is a more balanced middle tier.
